A few months have passed since the January 21, 2012 posting of the accurate Guan Yin Oracle, and now that global financial markets have stabilized with their usual ups and downs, it could be appropriate to discuss the way I have had interpreted this particular prediction:
“Silkworms and grain will yield only half a crop, but your herds will bring you better profit.”
Whether or not Yi aficionados and/or Daoist devotees can learn something from this second article related to the art of interpretation and more will be up to them.
Firstly, it is important to remember that cryptic messages including omens from Celestial sources and the Book of Changes cannot simply be revealed to others. Heaven secrets and messages on future events are meant for private consumption. Discussing the received message(s) in private with someone more knowledgeable - say, the temple assistant, - to help with an early interpretation is however perfectly alright. They usually would be disinterested in the matter at hand. After all until the outcome is known or the omen has unfolded, would they come to know about the accuracy of the message(s).
In the first entry on this oracle, I had mentioned that it could be worthwhile for investors (aka readers) to interpret the prediction.
If they have interpreted it correctly, and have invested accordingly, they could have made some handsome gains from the global stock markets (including the KLSE). Most of these markets have rallied since January 2012, although some had shorter rallies than others.
Let me reveal the interpretation before the next ‘juicy’ part, so that everyone can follow the storyline.
On August 31, 2011, several months after my retirement, I consulted (Qiu) Guan Yin on my fortune and the Oracle (Qin) received contained several relevant and important messages. Most of these messages were clarifications on why the Book of Changes gave those prognostications to me earlier on. In addition the oracle indicated:
“Silkworms and grain will yield only half a crop, but your herds will bring you better profit.”
On the surface, this cryptic message would be more relevant to farmers, is it not? Why would Guan Yin give something irrelevant to me? It must have some relevance, I had thought, and therefore pondered on this particular prediction over the next few days, similar to what I do with Yi prognostications and/or omens.
After the pondering, I realized that silkworms and grain were considered commodities during the olden days. Herds were much easier to interpret and provided a strong foundation to the lie of interpretation. For clarity, herd is a collective noun for animals, namely bulls; therefore it relates to stock market terminology.
Similar to prognostications from the Book of Changes, the interpreted prediction provides alternatives and now would read as:
Investing in commodities will yield only half a crop. Investing in stocks will bring better profit.
Take note that the term ‘yield only half a crop’ can mean 50% profit, or making losses! Therefore the prediction indicated that for profit it is definitely better to invest in stocks rather than commodities.
If we can zoom back to late August and September 2011, around the time of receiving the oracle, every investor’s eyes were on gold, then, including the author.
Gold was the mother of all rallies in commodities. Gold prices were soaring sky high. Many an investor, including moms and pops, were struck by the gold fever trying hard not to miss out on the action. It was easy to make money by buying gold futures, or by buying and hoarding gold bullion, coins and jewelry. Gold prices seemed to go up forever and not come down. Analysts and fund managers across the globe fueled the speculation with more promising and ever higher target prices in their reports on gold. (Note: Beware that the analysts and fund managers always seemed to know more than the gods – ShenXian!)
Armed with the interpretation of Guan Yin’s prediction I decided not to touch gold or other commodities at all. This is the type of protection I had mentioned in the first article.
Sure enough, in the first couple of weeks in September 2011, gold soared to USD 1920 an ounce. It then promptly recorded its biggest plunge in monetary terms, a drop of 300 plus dollars, within a day or two. What happened was that investors had stampeded to rush out of gold with the plunge further exacerbated by lots of deleveraging and margin calls in gold futures. Probably many gold investors got badly burnt when the huge plunge took place. Prices of other commodities also fell on cue.
To date, those who had bought gold at or near its September 2011 highs are still nursing their wounds from realized or unrealized losses with prices stabilizing in between the USD 1,600 and USD 1,700 levels.
In line with the interpreted Guan Yin Oracle’s prediction, I had started to invest in the stagnated Stock Market late 2011 buying on dips and accumulated more stocks in the months of January and February 2012. Disposing of them for profit during the expected rally; and in line with the timing from a prognostication from the Book of Changes reduced stockholdings to a very manageable level, just before the rally ended. Share prices have fallen quite a bit since. And the rest as they say is history.
If oracles from divinities or the Book of Changes are accurate and we cannot correctly interpret them, we could be at the losing end. For example, we could have invested in commodities such as gold instead of stocks.
Never over rely on the interpretations of incompetents; otherwise you may have cause for regrets. Without realizing it, you could suddenly find yourself facing impending disaster(s), financial or otherwise, as a more severe example. You may find out later that the Book of Changes has already warned you about the forthcoming disaster(s).
In the study of profound subjects like the Book of Changes and Tao, avoiding the company of incompetents and sycophants could prove fruitful to students. These particular types of people have neither the talent nor virtue.
A pointed question put to Yi aficionados especially those with decades of study and practice:
If divinities and/or the Book of Changes want to help us to meet everything in the right way and yet we choose to ignore this divine help through ignorance or indolence, how can we ever achieve the ability to assist the gods?
As indicated earlier on, what each Yi aficionado and/or Daoist devotee can learn from this discussion on the interpretation of oracles and/or prognostications will be up to them.

Talking about dragons (Long)
The US and China (including Taiwan) media are all abuzz with the newest appearance of a popular sports personality, Jeremy Lin, who has only started to play in the US National Basketball Association (NBA) several weeks ago. The US media were quick to coin a catchphrase, “Linsanity”, for the media frenzy and the ever growing number of fans watching Lin play with his New York Knicks basketball team. The US media are simply amazed by (US born) Lin’s sudden and fast growing popularity in the States, in China, and in Taiwan where his parents migrated from.
After all in these gloomy times, is it not good to have a new popular hero to look up to?
But that does not really explain the “Linsanity” phenomenon, does it?
Therefore to understand this phenomenon in perspective, we have to talk about dragons and in particular, Chinese dragons.
Dragons (Long) are mythical and legendary creatures.
The West grew up to view dragons as smoke snorting fire breathing ferocious beasts which more often than not kidnap fair maidens and bring them back to their mountain caves providing a chance for white knights in shining armors to try and kill them, and rescue the damsels in distress.
However, since ancient times, the Chinese view their dragons differently.
Some ethnic Chinese see dragons as celestial beings represented by respective Dragon Kings of the four seas, while others and in particular the ancients view them as beneficent, since dragons bring rains and water to olden agricultural China, or magnificent, as they soar in the heavens. The dragon has also been taken as a symbol to represent Chinese emperors, the sons of heaven.
Tradition has it that dragons are born leaders or can become great leaders whom people look up to and many ethnic Chinese in present times prefer to have their children born in the year of the dragon. This explains why maternity beds are heavily booked in China and in Hong Kong hospitals this year since according to Fengshui, 2012 is the year of the water dragon. These parents like other parents want their children to be very successful in life, and therefore, so to speak, become dragons.
However, contrary to popular beliefs, from studies and observations over the years: those born in the years of dragons still have to work very hard like everyone else (including those born under other animal signs) to achieve phenomenal or supreme success.
Therefore someone not born in a dragon year can still become a dragon. If readers want to know how to; study or reread the available Book of Changes (I Ching / Yijing / Zhouyi) and the first hexagram of this ancient classic, Qian / The Creative Heaven where all six lines talk about dragons.
With all that said, Jeremy Lin, born in 1988 a year of the dragon, was a hidden dragon which cannot act, until he started playing with the New York Knicks team, and has since emerged as a dragon appearing in the field.
The Duke of Zhou added to this nine in the second place of Qian: It furthers one to see this great person (Da Ren).
This probably explains the “Linsanity” phenomenon to the media, while Yi aficionados can learn a bit more about the Book of Changes?

That great light from heaven
Yi aficionados and scholars know there is much wisdom contained in the ancient classic, the Book of Changes. To understand something very deep, we may have to dig into our reserves. In a way, it could be easier for the ethnic Chinese because of their upbringing to understand more of what is written in the Yijing, since ancient wisdoms pervade Chinese civilization.
But just like the diligent Yi aficionados in the West, the ethnic Chinese still have to put in as much effort by pondering, doing research where necessary, or even asking the ShenXian (Daoist deities and celestial immortals), if and when a rare opportunity arises, to arrive at a more meaningful understanding of what the Yi wanted to say or teach.
After all, who can say for certain that our understanding of the Zhouyi and the ten wings is deep enough and/or our interpretation of the prognostications will be correct all the time?
Take for instance the prognostication given by the Yi about heaven sending down a great light to help the people. (Also refer to entry, “The returning great light” on February 4, 2011)
In the Commentary on the Decision (the 1st and 2nd Wings) of Hexagram 42 Yi / Increase, Confucius commented:
“Decreasing what is above and increasing what is below;
then the joy of the people is boundless.
What is above places itself under what is below:
This is the way of the great light.
And it furthers one to undertake something:
Central, correct, and blessed.”

In this entry, I will only provide the framework taken from the Yi for the esoteric and the deep thinkers to come up with the reason why the great light was sent, what or whom does it represent, how this light can help the people, and who these people are?

An accurate Guan Yin Oracle
On a short holiday outstation about five months ago, I paid a visit to a Guan Yin (Avalokitesvara or Goddess of Mercy) temple. A relative had mentioned that this particular temple’s oracles are accurate.
It has been almost three decades since I last consulted a Guan Yin oracle, therefore I had to seek guidance from one of the temple assistants on how to go about it (qiu qian) the correct way. Having been told what to do and making a required donation to the temple maintenance in exchange for a big candle to be lit at the main entrance altar, I proceeded to consult for a Guan Yin oracle (qian).
After obtaining the oracle and pondering on what were indicated therein, it seems that Guan Yin has clarified the reasons why the Book of Changes (I Ching or Yijing) gave me the four previous prognostications.
Further to that, just like the Yijing in protecting the student, Guan Yin indicated:
“Silkworms and grain will yield only half a crop, but your herds will bring you better profit.”
As an investor, this prediction given on August 31, 2011 turns out to be accurate. When it will end is not for me to say, since I know little about the timing of Guan Yin oracles.

What is he smoking?
Investors would be aware that since August till yesterday the global financial markets were in turmoil. According to Bloomberg reports about 10 trillion of dollars have been wiped out from the stock markets over this short period of time.
Volatility in the financial markets has yet to subside. No one knows when it will subside. Those who have sold off their stocks in early July or those already swimming in liquidity (the fishes) could be the lucky ones.
For all we know, the pigs and those who had been averaging down their stocks could be facing more difficult times up ahead. Perhaps like the Book of Changes say during that time – within the turmoil – “They bear shame”.
The farmers who rear the pigs are the ones who bear shame. The holes dug by the greedy animals are way too deep for the farmers to fill in, try as they may. And whence have greedy pigs felt shame?
Yesterday on Bloomberg TV, a reporter asked a fund manager on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange what he thinks investors should do since the global stock markets were falling like ten pins. The Nasdaq, Dow, and the S&P 500 were down around 4% each, at the time of the interview. The fund manager remained unflustered and kept on saying it was the right time to buy stocks until the anchor woman interjected and pass on to him some email messages from viewers.
“What is he smoking?” The viewers had asked.
And I chuckled after hearing this.
The fund manager countered that he has been asking his clients to do the same. The anchor woman added, “You have been optimistic since the beginning of the year.”
No wonder the savvy US investors have been withdrawing many billions of dollars from the investment funds since the second quarter of 2011. Perhaps they had also wondered what their fund managers have been smoking after September 2008!

Softly-Softly
If we want to deal with or write about something sensitive to others (regular readers, public, government authorities) we need to apply a softly-softly approach to the matter at hand. If it happens to be a matter of life or death then we may have to be more direct and to the point. Otherwise subtle hints will do if we want to be circumspect or discreet.
Revealing and/or blogging on omens, given by the Book of Changes, over the many years have taught me that.
If an unlucky omen has nothing to do with someone, and unless they ask, it would be pointless to let them know.
If publishing the omen in the blog can help readers prepare themselves on anything untoward that may occur in their country or to them, before it happens, then it could be worthwhile to do so. But if there are only infrequent readers or none at all from the country concerned to read your blog then your every effort to publish the omen go to waste, since it helps no one.
Furthermore, certain countries apply strict restrictions over what can be posted in public blogs by their citizens. If the government authorities deem what are published in the blog to be sensitive issues, the blogger living in that country could be arrested and charged in court. Thus the softly-softly approach applies to an entry even if it deals with omens which relates to the particular country.
Regular readers may be surprised why there was no discussion on the recent big earthquake and tsunami in Japan in this blog. Should there be one? There is already an ongoing and extensive coverage by the world media to show the devastation, the suffering, and the pain, and the burning of nuclear reactors at a crippled plant.
I just wonder why the seismic experts did not spot this big one coming to forewarn Japan. They have been spending much time and efforts trying to predict it over the decades.
In case some readers wonder if I foreknow anything, read the entries published in the months of February and May 2010 on the mention of earthquakes.
In February 2010, a distant relative – a New Zealander - came and stayed over for Chinese New Year. Since he had just retired, I suggested that he read the Yi. After explaining to him what students can learn from this ancient classic, he asked if earthquakes can strike his country, New Zealand just like the January one that struck Haiti. And I said yes.
But the big ones, I further told him, could strike China and Japan, followed by tsunamis.
There were so many earthquakes and related deaths in the world last year and to date that I have already lost count.
By the way, the New Zealander and my kin live in the North Island while Christchurch where the earthquakes struck is located in the South Island of New Zealand. And they are safe.

Breakthrough leads to Revolution (2)
In the study of the Book of Changes, how we question, divine, and interpret the prognostication depict our level of understanding of this ancient Chinese classic.
The question can be simple and direct, the divination method can be through the use of yarrow stalks or three coins, and the interpretation by relying on the text and/or images of the Yijing. It goes without saying that the more important the divination question is to us, the more pondering on the prognostication is required, before we can really say that the answer is clear as day. Otherwise the guidance provided by the Yijing is lost.
Take for example the recent entry on the prognostication given by the Yi of Breakthrough which leads to Revolution.
In that entry, I have mentioned that the arrogant dragon in the top (unbroken) line of Hexagram 1 Qian / The Creative Heaven has changed to become the Xiao Ren in the top (broken) line of Hexagram 43 Guai / Breakthrough. And that for all intents and purposes this Xiao Ren has to be truthfully announced and be pushed or thrown out citing examples of the public protests and the ‘successful’ revolution in both Tunisia and Egypt (because the oppressor in both cases was pushed out).
There was no mention of Libya in the previous entry, because the uprising shows a different scenario from that given in the Judgment of Breakthrough which says:
Breakthrough. One must resolutely make the matter known at the court of the king. It must be announced truthfully. Danger. It is necessary to notify one’s own city. It does not further to resort to arms. It furthers one to undertake something. [W/B]
The differences between the successful overthrow of the oppressors in Tunisia and Egypt, and the current ‘civil war’ in Libya is because of the resort to arms. The resorting to arms gives rise to the dilemma of the Western world and the UN on how to deal with the legit uprising in Libya.
If the protesters had not resorted to arms then it can be said to be a crime against humanity if they were shot and killed by those in power. Therefore the Yi is correct when the Judgment advises that it does not further to resort to arms.
Perhaps the anonymous commentator in the previous entry did not take this slight but yet important difference into account. Furthermore, it proves nigh impossible for a Xiao Ren to change back to a Da Ren since the harm is done especially where innocents have been killed - a crime against humanity, so to speak.
According to the Nine in the second line of Hexagram Guai, preparedness is of utmost importance to a Junzi, Da Ren, and/or rulers of nations.
If rulers have had led with humanity and justice instead of oppression, injustice, and corruption, would the people revolt against their rule?
If a nation has prepared for natural disasters like earthquakes and floods for example, would she and her people fear a ‘Super Moon’ this coming March 19?
If the Junzi or Da Ren has prepared against the eventuality that things (such as security, personal safeguards, provisions, etc) are insufficient or that plans (including investments, businesses, etc) will fail would they constantly have to live in fear?
The multitude could be caught by surprise if natural disasters, worldwide epidemics, global financial crisis occurred, but those who are prepared would not suffer too much. Among the prepared would be the Junzi and the Da Ren, for they can foreknow.
This is why the prognostication says:
A cry of alarm. Arms at evening and at night. Fear nothing.
Therefore, even if there is going to be a revolution in their country, there is nothing to fear.
(Note: The change in the Nine in the second line of Hexagram 43 Breakthrough leads to Hexagram 49 Ge / Revolution.)

In that entry, I have mentioned that the arrogant dragon in the top (unbroken) line of Hexagram 1 Qian / The Creative Heaven has changed to become the Xiao Ren in the top (broken) line of Hexagram 43 Guai / Breakthrough. And that for all intents and purposes this Xiao Ren has to be truthfully announced and be pushed or thrown out citing examples of the public protests and the ‘successful’ revolution in both Tunisia and Egypt (because the oppressor in both cases was pushed out).
There was no mention of Libya in the previous entry, because the uprising shows a different scenario from that given in the Judgment of Breakthrough which says:
Breakthrough. One must resolutely make the matter known at the court of the king. It must be announced truthfully. Danger. It is necessary to notify one’s own city. It does not further to resort to arms. It furthers one to undertake something. [W/B]
The differences between the successful overthrow of the oppressors in Tunisia and Egypt, and the current ‘civil war’ in Libya is because of the resort to arms. The resorting to arms gives rise to the dilemma of the Western world and the UN on how to deal with the legit uprising in Libya.
If the protesters had not resorted to arms then it can be said to be a crime against humanity if they were shot and killed by those in power. Therefore the Yi is correct when the Judgment advises that it does not further to resort to arms.
Perhaps the anonymous commentator in the previous entry did not take this slight but yet important difference into account. Furthermore, it proves nigh impossible for a Xiao Ren to change back to a Da Ren since the harm is done especially where innocents have been killed - a crime against humanity, so to speak.
According to the Nine in the second line of Hexagram Guai, preparedness is of utmost importance to a Junzi, Da Ren, and/or rulers of nations.
If rulers have had led with humanity and justice instead of oppression, injustice, and corruption, would the people revolt against their rule?
If a nation has prepared for natural disasters like earthquakes and floods for example, would she and her people fear a ‘Super Moon’ this coming March 19?
If the Junzi or Da Ren has prepared against the eventuality that things (such as security, personal safeguards, provisions, etc) are insufficient or that plans (including investments, businesses, etc) will fail would they constantly have to live in fear?
The multitude could be caught by surprise if natural disasters, worldwide epidemics, global financial crisis occurred, but those who are prepared would not suffer too much. Among the prepared would be the Junzi and the Da Ren, for they can foreknow.
This is why the prognostication says:
A cry of alarm. Arms at evening and at night. Fear nothing.
Therefore, even if there is going to be a revolution in their country, there is nothing to fear.
